A Plan is being developed to improve the operation and coordination of road, rail, bus, bike and pedestrians from the Massachusetts state line to the Canadian border. The Vermont Agency of Transportation, the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization, and five Regional Planning Commissions along western Vermont are cooperating on this Plan for the transportation system in western Vermont over the next 20 years.
The five commissions partnering on the Western Corridor Transportation Management Plan are: Addison County Regional Planning Commission, Bennington County Regional Commission, Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission, Northwest Regional Planning Commission and Rutland Regional Planning Commission.
The Western Corridor Transportation Management Plan will address highway and rail travel for passenger and freight as well as public transportation (rail and bus), air, bicycle and pedestrian modes. It will look at ways to improve and balance freight movements, coordinate land use and transportation planning, encourage collaboration and connectivity among regions, promote innovative, fiscally sound financing and investment solutions and minimize impacts to the human and natural environment.
There will be a number of opportunities for the public to meet and talk about the development of the Plan. Regional forums and focus groups will be held in the winter and spring of 2009. A project website, www.vtwesterncorridor.org, is available to the public to access information and to provide comments on-line.
